Bombay High Court Verdict (July 21, 2025)

(Popularly known as 7/11)

  • A two‑judge bench of the Bombay High Court (Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak) quashed the convictions of all twelve accused in the 2006 Mumbai local train bombings.

  • They overturned the earlier MCOCA court verdict (from September 2015) which had sentenced five to death and seven to life imprisonment.

  • The HC ruled that the prosecution had “utterly failed” to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. Evidence was deemed weak—including unreliable witness testimony, possibly coerced confessions, and mishandling of material evidence. It described the identification parades and proof chain as “very abnormal.”

  • The accused, including those who had been on death row or serving life terms, were ordered to be released immediately, subject to no other legal holds.
